A hospital in Prachin Buri province has warned people that consuming large amounts of fah talai jone (green chiretta) can damage the kidneys and liver.

The health warning was issued after people rush to buy fah talai jone as a ‘covid cure’

Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital issued the warning after seeing rising demand for the herbal extract from people who believe it could protect them from Covid-19.

The hype came after the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine recently announced that the Thai herb had cured more than 300 Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms.

Since the first wave of Covid-19 emerged in Thailand, certain hospitals, including Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr, have been using fah talai jone along with other drugs to treat Covid-19 patients. The patients reportedly recovered without side effects.

Last December, the Ministry of Health approved the use of fah talai jone for the early-stage treatment of Covid-19.

However, Thai experts warn that there is no solid scientific evidence that fah talai jone can boost immunity or relieve symptoms of Covid-19.

The herbal extract has been used in Asia for centuries to fight flu and related illnesses.

Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital added that research showed that the herb can help prevent flu when consumed in small amounts for three months. A doctor at the hospital said that fah talai jone boosts immunity.
