Heavy rainfall drags Thai man with kitchen and all into Thailand’s Yom River

A 79-year-old man was lucky enough to survive when a riverbank collapsed and he disappeared with his kitchen in the Yom River in Bang Rakam district of Phitsanulok province.

The alarmed rescue service rushed to Ban Wang Ped village in Tambon Bang Rakam early in the morning, around 6 a.m. after being warned that an elderly man was splashing in the water while trapped under part of his kitchen.

Khun Khua Meeyaem’s legs were trapped by a piece of concrete, part of the wall of his house. The local residents helped the rescue team to save their elderly villagers from drowning.

The muddy water made the rescue difficult. An iron wedge was used to lift the concrete slab off his legs. After an hour of sustained effort, Khua was freed and taken out of the river. He had injuries to his left leg and was exhausted.

The rescue service rushed him to a hospital.

His 82-year-old wife, Luan Meeyaem, said it rained heavily overnight. She got up around 5 am to cook rice and prepare food to give to monks.

She waited outside in front of the house for the monks to give their alms. When her husband did not come to her, she went to look for him in the bedroom. He wasn’t there, so she went to look in the kitchen at the back of the house and found that her kitchen was gone.

Her husband lay in the water and yelled for help, tears streaming down her cheeks. She ran as quickly as possible to her neighbours for help, who immediately called rescue workers.

Khun Tharadol Apijaree, the deputy. Bang Rakam district chief inspected the damaged house and promised help.

He warned people living along the Yom River that heavy rain was more likely and that they should be on the lookout for riverbank subsidence and landslides. He ordered local officials to help residents get their belongings out of homes that were at risk.
