Hero Nurse: Shocking footage showing a brave A&E nurse confronting a knifeman so patients could get to safety has been shared by police in Leicestershire.

Twenty-two-year-old Yusuf Aka was jailed for five years yesterday following the incident which took place in the early hours of the morning on 16 January.

In the clip Aka can be seen calmly walking into the emergencydepartment at Leicester Royal Infirmary after he had stabbed a man outside.

As he approached, the heroic nurse began ushering patients to safety, only for Aka to start lashing computers across the room.

DC Chris Symmonds, from Leicestershire Police, told ITV “This was a terrifying experience not only for the victim who was stabbed, but also for the many members of the public and staff who were present that morning.

“Aka carried on his rampage oblivious to the panic breaking out behind him.

“The actions of members of staff who quickly took control of the situation, and led people out of his way without a thought for their own safety, was commendable, and they should be proud of what they accomplished.”

Kerry Johnston, University Hospitals of Leicester’s emergency department head of nursing heaped praise of the bravery and quick thinking of hospital staff saying: “This was a frightening experience for both patients and staff in the department that night, the impact of which cannot be underestimated.

“My thanks goes to the emergency department staff, involved in the incident, who showed exceptional bravery in bringing this serious attack to a swift and safe conclusion with the help of Leicestershire Police and other members of the public.”

In court in May, Aka pleaded guilty to GBH wounding with intent, affray and possession of an offensive weapon.

At his sentencing hearing yesterday he was jailed for five years, and was handed 16 months, to run concurrently, for affray and the possession of an offensive charge.

Judge Philip Head accepted that Aka had been mentally unwell at the time of the attack, but added that the incident could have been self-induced due to cannabis use.

Once released he will be subject to a five-year licence order.
