The dismembered body parts found floating in Bangkok’s Saen Saeb Canal have been identified as those of a 49-year-old Thai man, Winai Jaisaen, based on the information from his two thumbs.

Police are contacting his relatives to provide information for their investigation into his suspected murder and dismemberment, a source at the Royal Thai Police’s Central Police Forensic Science Division revealed on Sunday.

The body identification was made possible from the discovery of his upper torso in the canal near Ramkhamhaeng Soi 85/3 in the Hua Mark area of Bang Kapi district on Saturday afternoon. The discovered body part indicated the victim was a large-built, short-haired, bearded man in his late 40s, who had also sustained a six-inch-long knife-wound.

His upper thigh was retrieved at 10am on Sunday from the canal near the Rama 9 Pond community – three kilometres from where the upper torso was found. Police suspected the leg belonged to the same victim, said Metropolitan Police Area 4 deputy head Pol Colonel Suriya Nakkaew. An hour later the victim’s right leg was fished out of the canal only 50 metres from the Bang Kapi pier near Lat Phrao Soi 148, rescue worker Kosol Lawirat said.
