In Thailand, the delta variant is responsible for more than 98 percent of new infections

More than 98 percent of new Covid-19 infections are of a delta variant, according to a study by the Thai Department of Medical Science.

“The department has been investigating new Covid-19 infections every week, while the latest result from last week (October 16-22) showed that 98.6 percent of new patients are infected with the delta variant,” it said. Dr. Supphakit Siriluck, the director of the above-mentioned department.

“0.8 percent of new patients have a beta variant, while 0.6 percent were infected with the alpha variant.”

“In the four deep southern provinces, the delta variant is responsible for 96.9 percent of new infections, followed by the beta variant with 2.3 percent and the alpha variant with 0.8 percent.”

Dr Supphakit also added that as of Sept. 27, Thailand has found 18 patients infected with a sub-variant of alpha, also known as alpha plus E484K, from sample collection. two inmates in Chiang Mai prison,” he said. “All 18 patients have recovered and are allowed to leave the hospitals. Officials are finding active cases in the areas to check for more infections with alpha plus subvariant.”

“As for the sub-variants of delta, there are currently up to 47 delta plus sub-variants found around the world. In Thailand, 19 delta plus sub-variants have been found, none of which have shown faster spread or resistance to vaccine,” he said. “The delta plus AY 4.2 that is spreading 10 to 15 percent faster and is currently under British government supervision has yet to be found in Thailand.”

“The case of delta-plus infection recently reported in Kamphaeng Phet province since September is actually of the AY 1 subvariant and not the AY 4.2 subvariant,” he added. “The AY 1 also shows no evidence of faster spread or vaccine resistance.”
