A photo of two sexually dressed girls handing out free coffee to drivers at a police checkpoint has caused an uproar

Two Thai models in Chiang Mai were handing out free coffee to cheer up drivers during the “seven deadly days” of the New Year holidays. But what the women were wearing really cheered up and caught the attention of drivers.

Dressed as if they were going to a nightclub, wearing heels and tight dresses that are usually considered provocative and unacceptable to Thais, the women stood at a police checkpoint outside the district office.

The women attracted so much attention that many outraged people accused the police of hiring advertising models with low social responsibility, known as “beauties”. The local police department was forced to issue a statement saying that the police had not hired women for the road safety campaign.

In Thai society, “beauties of easy virtue” are often looked down upon as some are hired for private parties where drugs are used and sex for reward is practised.

The police station issued a statement after pictures of the women went viral on social media. According to police, a nearby sushi buffet restaurant wanted to take part in a New Year road safety campaign and organised the distribution of free coffee to keep drivers alert on the road.

“However, the restaurant did not inform us in advance that it would send such beauties… The campaign aims to improve road safety by giving free coffee to motorists so that they do not feel drowsy behind the wheel.”

Police added that the Chiang Mai deputy police chief visited the checkpoint and ordered the two women to stop handing out coffee immediately.
