Information on entering Thailand – April 2021

At the moment, the Thai government has developed a 4-part plan to fully open the country by the end of 2021 to early 2022.

According to reports, quarantine measures will be gradually softened for foreign tourists, and then the quarantine measures will be stopped altogether.

Do I need a visa?

Here is a list of countries whose citizens as of April the 1st will not need a visa to stay in Thailand for up to 45 days: Andora, Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, <maldives, Mauritius, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, Sweden, UAE, UK, USA, and Vietnam.

People who are traveling from Laos, Macau, Mongolia, and Russia can stay in Thailand for 30 days without a visa, and residents of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Korea, and Peru can stay for up to 90 days.

If you are not listed, you can apply for a special tourist visa. This will allow tourists to enter Thailand for a maximum stay of 90 days and then have a 90-day extension two times. However, the Special Tourist Visa program will end in September of this year, so the application has to be submitted before the deadline.

Any other type of visa has to be discussed with your embassy if your circumstances are exceptional.

Who can enter Thailand from April 1st

  1.  Thai citizens.
  2. People invited by the Thai government, out of necessity. Such permissions or invitations will be subject to terms and conditions.
  3. people who are in diplomatic or consular missions or with international organizations, or representatives of foreign governments performing their duties in Thailand, or people of other international agencies authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the need, including their spouses, parents, and children.
  4. Carriers of essential goods to be returned immediately upon completion of their job.
  5. Crew members heading to Thailand on a job with specific return and date-time.
  6. Mon-Thai persons who are spouses, parents, or children of Thai nationals.
  7. Non-Thai nationals with a residency certificate, including their spouses and children.
  8. Non-Thai nationals who have a work permit or have been granted a work permit in Thailand under Thai law, including their spouses and children.
  9. Individuals who are not Thai nationals who study in educational institutions approved by the Thai authorities, including their parents or guardians, excluding students in non-formal educational institutions in accordance with the law on private schools and other similar private educational institutions.
  10. Foreign nationals in need of medical treatment in Thailand and their accompanying persons. However, this does not include the treatment of Covid-19.
  11. Individuals who are not Thai nationals who have been granted permission to enter Thailand under special agreements between Thai government agencies and other countries, or individuals or groups of individuals who have been granted authorization by the Prime Minister and the Special Committee for the Prevention and Control of the Spread of Covid-19

Mandatory quarantine

From April 1, the quarantine time on arrival in Thailand has been reduced. Unless you are from a country where mutated Covid strains are currently a problem. This now includes many countries on the African continent.

It is necessary to pre-book and pay for quarantine at a registered hotel before traveling to Thailand.

For July, the Thai government has planned two projects of the so-called “tourist sandbox”, these are the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui, entry to which will not require mandatory quarantine for foreigners with vaccine certificates.

Health insurance

Currently, there is a requirement to purchase special insurance against Covid-19 in the amount of at least $100,000. Your embassy can provide you with a list of insurance companies currently providing this type of insurance. Your general travel insurance will not cover this.

Package of documents

Anyone traveling to Thailand in April must apply for an entry certificate including Thais, apply for a certificate online by uploading documents on the website the Thai Embassy in your country, food in a copy of your passport, a copy of your Visa if required, and a copy of your insurance policy.

After approval, you can buy a ticket and then provide a copy of the air ticket confirmation of your hotel quarantine booking. After your application is approved you can download the certificate of entry on the website.

Checklist

So, before heading to the airport, make sure you have everything…… Your passport, certificate of Entry, Covid insurance policy, regular travel insurance ( recommended but not required), confirmed hotel reservations for quarantine, and your booking for your return flight unless you intend to apply for another visa upon arrival in Thailand.

Arrival in Thailand

Upon arrival in Thailand, you will undergo another covid-19 test before being taken directly to your hotel for quarantine ( sometimes this test is done at the hotel). You will be checked twice more: Once in the middle and then at the end of the quarantine.

Discovery of Thailand

From July, The government will test a pilot program in Phuket that will allow people to arrive without any quarantine. If all goes well, Thailand is scheduled to fully reopen by October, however, it should be understood that still many variables, and any of these plans and dates may change
