Israel and Palestine have not yet reached an agreement on a possible independent investigation into the death of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Israeli authorities say it is not clear who shot the Palestinian journalist, but according to Palestine, it is clear that she was killed by the Israeli army.

Abu Akleh, along with other journalists, was covering the Israeli army’s incursion into the north of the West Bank. At one point she was hit in the head by a bullet, after which she was rushed to the hospital. There she died of her injury.

The Palestinian Ministry of Information reports to Al Jazeera that Abu Akleh’s death is not an incident. For example, since 2000, as many as 45 Palestinian journalists have been murdered by Israeli army violence.

Both Al Jazeera and several Palestinian journalists who reported on the Israeli raid on the city of Jenin along with Abu Akleh report that the fatal bullet came from the Israeli army. Israeli authorities have released images on social media in recent days in which they say the journalist was hit in the head by a Palestinian bullet. However, an Israeli human rights organization claims that the images were not filmed on the spot where Abu Akleh was shot.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said at a memorial ceremony that he had declined the option of investigating Abu Akleh’s death with Israel. “We will immediately go to the International Criminal Court to track down the criminals.”

Ned Price, the spokesman for the US State Department, condemned the death of the journalist but said he has confidence in an independent investigation by Israel. Ahmad Auznaid, the president of an American organization that champions the rights of Palestinians, criticized Price’s statement. “You can’t ask Israel to examine itself and expect it to come to a different result than it has been reaching for decades,” he told Al Jazeera.

The death of Abu Akleh sparked outrage worldwide. She had worked for Al Jazeera’s Arabic language channel since 1997 and was a much-loved journalist. The journalist is expected to be buried in Jerusalem tomorrow morning.
