The New York state prosecutor has demanded more than 25 years in prison against R. Kelly. The singer was found guilty last year of human trafficking, extortion and leading a decades-long plan to recruit women and underage girls and then sexually exploit them.
According to the prosecutor, R. Kelly “used his celebrity, money and popularity as an R&B artist for 25 years to commit and hide his crimes.” In addition, the prosecutor is convinced that the singer does not regret his behavior. His decades-long crimes appear to have been fueled by narcissism and the belief that his musical talent exempted him from any need to adapt his behavior—however predatory, harmful, humiliating, or abusive toward others—to the constraints of the law. ”
R. Kelly has so far always denied all allegations. According to one of his lawyers, he should receive a prison sentence of no more than 14 years. The judge will decide on June 29 what the singer’s sentence will actually be.
