Johnny Depp has won the libel suit against his ex-wife Amber Heard. That was decided by the jury yesterday after a long, much-discussed trial.
Heard has to pay Depp 15 million dollars because of the ruling, which ultimately amounts to 10 million dollars in practice. Part of the sentence is in fact a maximum in the state of Virginia, where the lawsuit was served. Depp also has to pay Heard 2 million dollars, because of statements by his former lawyer about Heard. On all other points, Depp was in favor of the jury.
Johnny Depp says in an emotional statement on Instagram that he is very happy with the verdict. “The jury has given me my life back,” he says, among other things. Heard said in a statement that he was “indescribably disappointed”. “I am devastated that the mountain of evidence was not enough to withstand the unprecedented power, influence, and pressure of my ex-husband.”
Depp and Heard started a relationship in 2012 and married in 2015. A year later, Heard again filed for divorce and a contact ban. In 2018, at the height of the #metoo movement, she wrote an opinion article in The Washington Post, in which she claimed to be a victim of domestic violence.
Despite the fact that Depp’s name was not mentioned, it was assumed in the media that it was about Depp, given the timing of the piece. The actor claimed that the allegations prevented him from being offered film roles, so he took Heard to court and demanded $50 million. Heard subsequently sued Depp for $100 million for orchestrating an online hate campaign against her, which resulted in her being fired from her role in Aquaman 2 and L’Oreal.
The entire trial was live for the public to follow and media coverage was enormous. During the case, many intimate details about the Hollywood couple’s private life came out. Drug and alcohol use, a lost finger, and an incident involving pooping in bed; everything became public.
