Justice Ministry orders food inspection at 12 Thailand prisons after ongoing complaints
Thai Prisons Correctional Department will randomly inspect food in 12 prisons across the country for quality or imperfections in the sourcing process.
The director of this department, Ayuth Sintoppant said yesterday that the justice minister, Somsak Thepsuthin, has appointed a committee to inspect food quality in prisons after the department received complaints about the poor quality of pork, chicken and vegetables, while some of the spices purchased did not follow and the orders did not go according to protocol
The committee wants to make surprise visits to uncover the truth. If problems are discovered, they should be resolved immediately.
The department has instructed outside agencies to regularly inspect prisoners’ food.
Prisons had been instructed to follow guidelines from ingredient procurement, inspection and food preparation to hygiene.
If an inmate becomes ill or even dies from eating prison food, the director and chief of that facility will be responsible while the commission investigates the matter.
