KLM avoids airspace over Afghanistan

Must read

KLM will adjust some of its routes over Afghanistan to and from Asia until at least tomorrow. A spokesperson for the airline said this to NH Nieuws. Passengers should take longer flight times into account.

The conquest of almost all of Afghanistan by the Taliban is the reason for KLM to fly around the country at least today. Foreign officials, such as embassy personnel, are currently being evacuated from the country. Several airlines send passenger planes to the capital Kabul for this, but cannot land in all cases due to the advancing Taliban.

Dutch embassy staff, interpreters and their families are collected by military aircraft, NOS reports. This has been decided by Defense Minister Bijleveld.

From Schiphol, the routes to New Delhi, Bangkok and Singapore will be adjusted in such a way that Afghan airspace is avoided. To Schiphol, this concerns the flight from New Delhi, and the combination flights from Hong Kong and Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Statement KLM:

“In the execution of its operation, KLM puts the safety of passengers and employees first. Choosing safe and optimal routes is an integral part of our daily practice. KLM monitors and assesses the situation in Afghanistan on a daily basis. KLM has decided not to allow the flights of 15 August to fly though Afghan airspace pending further developments. Passengers who fly to Asia with KLM today should take into account a slightly longer flight time.”
