Let us at least serve a glass of wine with dinner, complains the restaurateurs of Pattaya

Most restaurateurs from this coastal town on Thailand’s east coast have asked the government to at least explain why they are still banned from serving alcohol while bans have been lifted in restaurants and hotels in four other provinces.

Thanet Suparashasrangsi, chairman of Chonburi’s tourism board, said member restaurateurs wonder why the government will not allow restaurants in Pattaya and other tourist areas in the province to serve alcohol.

After all, SHA-certified restaurants and hotels in Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket and Phang Nga have been allowed to serve alcoholic drinks until 9 p.m. However, this does not apply to other “blue zone” areas that have been open to tourists since November 1.

“There are more than 800 new infections every day in the capital, while Chonburi only registers about 200 cases a day. Our infection rate is a lot lower than in Bangkok, and yet we are not allowed to serve alcohol. The government could initially only allow SHA-certified restaurants and hotels in Pattaya to serve liquor. Once the infection rate drops, authorities may consider reopening nightlife venues,” Thanet said.

Pisoon Saekoo, president of the East Thai Hotels Association, said banning liquor in restaurants in Pattaya is not a solution, as partygoers could trigger outbreaks anyway. In addition, he said, liquor is still sold in all convenience stores, so stopping restaurants from serving alcohol isn’t really the solution, but smacks of preference.
