77 per cent of respondents to a nationwide survey said they strongly disagree with legalizing the production of porn, saying it would predispose young people to sex.”

A new Nida Survey shows that a majority of Thais do not agree with a proposal to legalize the production of porn.

The National Institute of Development Administration, NIDA for short, asked respondents about the proposal to legalize the production of pornographic films. 77 per cent said they “disagree at all”, and said it would preoccupy children and young people with sex (which leaves your news bear wondering whether Thai youth “don’t engage in sex?)

The naysayers responded with things like… “pornographic material was immoral because Thailand is a Buddhist country”, and “they could also lead to more sex-related crimes and sexual harassment”.

But 20.5 per cent of respondents agreed with the proposal, noting that in modern times people should have the right to produce pornographic material.

Asked if they had ever viewed pornographic publications. 54.1 per cent said ‘no’. Another 45.8 per cent were more honest (we suspect) and said yes.

The poll was conducted by telephone between November 22 and 24 and 1,315 people aged 18 and over of different educational levels and occupations across the country…as is usual for the Nida election strategy.

For pornographic films, 56.5 per cent said ‘yes’ and 43.5 per cent said ‘no’.

The poll shows persistent hypocrisy from many Thais who seem generally tolerant of the country’s in-your-face red light scene, ‘gentlemen’ clubs and vulgar and sexually charged topics covered in the ever-popular soap operas. Legalized or not, rest assured that the productions will continue and that the vice squad will make well-publicized arrests from time to time (usually when the police must spend hours examining video footage before making the arrests).
