A 50-year-old man from China ran a 42-kilometer marathon while smoking one cigarette after another. The man, known as “Uncle Chen,” also completed the marathon an hour faster than the average man his age.
Running a marathon is not an easy task, but a Chinese man who goes by 'Uncle Chen' did so while chain-smoking a pack of cigarettes.

Photos of Chen, 50, running the Xin’anjiang Marathon on Nov. 6 went viral on China’s social media platform Weibo. Not long after, the organizers of the marathon shared his final certificate. It shows that Chen completed the marathon in 3 hours and 28 minutes. According to Livestrong.com, the average time for a 50-year-old man is around 4 hours and 34 minutes. And that is, of course, without devouring a pack of cigarettes.
So Uncle Chen was 66 minutes faster than the average man his age. With his performance, he finished 574th out of nearly 1500 runners. According to Outstock, this isn’t the first time Chen has “run and smoked.” For example, he completed the 2018 Guangzou Marathon in 3 hours and 36 minutes and the 2019 Xiaman Marathon in 3 hours and 32 minutes. That means that he even set a personal best with his most recent marathon in Xin’anjiang.
Some people are just built different.

Surprisingly, Chen is not a regular smoker. He wouldn’t normally smoke even one cigarette a day. The marathon runner himself has not explained why he smokes while running. On the Weibo platform , people speculate that the nicotine in cigarettes has a stimulant effect on him. While there are of course many other stimulants, it seems Chen has no intention of abandoning his formula for success.
