Earlier this week, a 24-year-old man was arrested in Bangkok for attacking virology specialist Dr Yong Poovorawan of Chulalongkorn University allegedly vilified by modifying an article on Wikipedia.
The arrest came after Dr Yong’s lawyer filed a complaint at Pathumwan Police Station that someone edited Yong’s biography in an article published on Wikipedia by adding the sentence: “He is a salesman.” of the Sinovac vaccine for the government of General Prayut Chan-o-cha.”
This addition quickly went viral and was shared massively on Thai social media over the past month.
The Police Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau located the suspect at a house in a village in Tha Kham Canton and arrested the man. Police also seized a cell phone that they believed might have been used to add the harmful words to the original Wikipedia article.
“The suspect was charged with defamation through advertising under Section 328 of the Criminal Code,” the agency said.
“We are investigating whether he also violated the Computer-Related Crime Act of 2017 by feeding false information into a computer system,” the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau added.
“Use online media responsibly and do not share news or articles from an unverified source,” the agency advised. “If you witness a violation of the Computer-Related Crime Act, please contact Cyber Crime hotline 1441.”
