Man dressed as ‘The Joker’ from Batman movie injures 17 people on Tokyo train

A man dressed in what appears to be a Joker costume from the Batman comics and movies is believed to have committed a stabbing on the Tokyo subway last Sunday night.

The metro had to make an emergency stop, after which the passengers tried to flee from the train through the windows in panic

The alleged attacker, 24-year-old Kyota Hattori, was arrested and charged with attempted murder. He was quoted as saying that he had failed at work and had problems with his friends and relations. The suspect also said he “wanted to kill people and get the death penalty”. He is also said to have said that he “thought to be sentenced to death from June”.

The attack began around 8 p.m. in a crowded train of 10 railcars at Hachioji to Shinjuku station in central Tokyo. Kyota is said to have told investigators he chose this route because he knew it would be busy, and also that he wouldn’t make many stops. The suspect also allegedly used lighter fluid to start a fire on the train.

Of the 17 people injured in the attack, a 70-year-old man was stabbed in the chest and is now in critical condition. The other victims, between teens and over-60s, suffered stab wounds and injuries from smoke inhalation.

Mister Kyota is also quoted as saying that he is fond of the Joker, a villain from the Batman comics and movies. When the attack happened, he was wearing a green shirt and purple suit as a Joker costume. Before the attack, he was from the Shibuya neighbourhood, which is known as a popular place for revellers to dress up in costumes to celebrate Halloween.
