A man found lead in a shrimp head from the Rim Muey fresh market in Mae Sot District, Loei Province. The man decided to share the story to warn people that the trend of using lead to cheat the weight scale is back. Pissanu Rawangpee posted on 19 November 2019 the picture of the shrimp head with lead inside. The post stated “Shrimp with lead inside from the Rim Muey market in Mae Sot. I’ve been living here for years eating shrimp. I’ve heard about it but today I experienced it. Even Mae Sot locals are cheated, no doubt people in other provinces deal with this too.”

The Channel One31 News Team went to interview Pissanu on 21 November 2019. The owner of the story stated that he purchased the shrimp from a fresh market in Mae Sot. Pissanu grilled the shrimp and was having a good meal until he ripped one shrimp apart and found lead inside the head of the shrimp. Inside the shrimp bucket, one of the shrimps had a weird black spot in its head. Pissanu picked it up. The lead was about 1.5 inches long. He is confident that it was the seller trying to make more profit by using lead as a way to increase the weight of the shrimp.

Pissanu revealed that he heard about other people finding lead inside the shrimps but this is the first time he experienced it for himself. He hopes that related sectors will take action on the issue as he doesn’t want such scam tactic to destroy the reputation of the province popular for Mae Sot river shrimps.

The main groups of victims are tourists who visit Loei. Police often receive reports from tourists that bought the shrimps from Burmese sellers. Officials have warned the sellers many times but after a while, the lead scam returns. Just as popular as lead stuffed into the shrimp head is adjusting the weight scale to seem heavier than it actually is. Pissanu hopes that serious action will be taken this time as Loei is currently in its high season and no tourists should be scammed like this.
