Italy is in shock at the death of a Nigerian street vendor in the coastal town of Civitanova Marche. Alika Ogorchukwu died at the age of 39 after being assaulted by a 32-year-old Italian in broad daylight on Friday.
Alika Ogorchukwu, a Nigerian peddler, was beaten to death as onlookers videotaped the horrific incident in northern Italy, not far from where a white supremacist went on a shooting rampage “hunting” Black immigrants in 2018. https://t.co/cYbPPQWQBk

Bystanders filmed the fatal beating, but no one intervened to help the victim. “The attacker first hit Ogorchukwu with a crutch, threw him to the ground and then hit him several times with his bare hands ,” local police chief Matteo Luconi said at a news conference on Saturday.
With the help of street cameras, the police were able to trace and arrest the Italian. The man is suspected of murder and theft, because he also stole the victim’s mobile phone.

Police are currently investigating the cause of the outbreak of violence. Several Italian media report that the man became furious after Ogorchukwu begged him and his girlfriend for change. Police are currently questioning witnesses, using videos circulating on Italian news sites and social media.
The images of the abuse are causing a lot of stir in Italy. People are angry that bystanders did not do anything to help the victim. The Nigerian community demonstrated against the violence the next day. Afterwards, representatives spoke to the mayor of Civitanova Marche.
