Sales of marijuana are booming in Thailand following the decriminalization of marijuana for use in food and for private recreational use

Marijuana has suddenly become a trend in Thailand among many Thai restaurants that openly offer cannabis-infused food and drinks after marijuana was removed from the list of banned drugs on June 9. Numerous shops openly sell marijuana and smoking paraphernalia, with plants that used to be secretly grown in backyards now being cultivated and sold openly, Thai Public Broadcasting Service reported.

A Nonthaburi food shop in a converted shipping container now offers a cannabis cheeseburger and fried chicken with shredded cannabis leaves. The owner said the leaves are also used in the marinade for the chicken as a condiment.

A housewife from the northeastern province of Buriram said she secretly planted hemp in her garden and uses the leaves as food or brews it as a drink to sleep well. The woman has now asked her children to move the cannabis pots to the front of the plot because she no longer needs to hide and hide them.

A member of a community enterprise from the northeastern province of Byngkan said that they had been growing and processing cannabis for some time with permission from the authorities, adding that they were now going to start selling cannabis seedlings.

The owner of a shop in the Lat Phrao area of Bangkok, which started selling recreational cannabis and smoking supplies, said it took just a few hours to run out of stock yesterday. Today, several customers were already queuing in front of the shop since early morning. According to the owner, the shop used to sell only cannabis-containing food and drinks, but now the shop has also started selling dried marijuana at 450-700 baht per gram.

The seller of the recreational marijuana shop claims to check the identity cards of all young-looking customers to make sure they are 20 years old or older. The shop does not allow smoking cannabis on its premises, he adds. An employee of the shop said that some customers come with their parents, who advise them on how to use the product properly. Another shop employee admitted that he himself occasionally uses marijuana, he used to do it secretly, but now there is no need to hide anymore.

On the first day of marijuana legalization in Thailand, more than 150,000 people registered to grow cannabis at home. The change in the law allows people to grow their own cannabis after registering at plookganja.fda.moph.go.th or via the mobile app “ปลูกกกัญ”.

A total of 3,071 inmates serving time for cannabis-related offenses have been released from prisons across the country since the removal of marijuana from Thailand’s list of illegal drugs went into effect, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Corrections Tawatchai Chaiwat said.

National Police deputy chief Roy Yingkapairote said the police would not arrest those who smoke marijuana at home. But those who smoke marijuana in public places could face charges, he added. The sale of marijuana to people under the age of 20, pregnant women, breastfeeding women and certain groups of people designated by the Ministry of Health remains prohibited.
