Metal barriers have been placed around the ancient temple of Ayutthaya to protect against flooding

More than 100 soldiers and officials of the Fine Arts Department have erected a 2-meter high metal flood barrier in Ayutthaya. The weir covers a distance of 165 meters around the temple, which is located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River.

Sandbags have also been placed in front of the weir to slow the flow of water and a wall of jetties will be built behind the level to reinforce it.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Civil Protection said the level of the river rose at a rapid pace as the Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat province discharges a lot of water to reduce flooding in the north.

The Wat Chaiwatthanaram is a major tourist attraction in the ancient city of Ayutthaya and although the complex is part of the Ayutthaya Historical Park, it is not included in the areas designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
