Missing 36-year-old Thai man found after 15 days, reportedly killed by three elephants in Ban Bueng

A 36-year-old Thai man has been found after 15 days, allegedly trampled by at least three elephants in Ban Bueng.

Ban Bueng Police were notified of the incident near a mountain in Baan Hin, Nong Paikaew Sub-district, at 6:30 PM yesterday. The specific area is, according to the police, very remote and rural.

Emergency services and police arrived on the scene to find the body of a middle-aged Thai man later identified as 36-year-old Tongbai Kumarncherd from Roi-Et in northeastern Thailand.

His body was found a kilometre from a local road by a local resident looking for food in the forest. Officials found multiple elephant footprints, assuming at least three different animals were involved.

Soonthorn Suepsoonthorn, who found the fatal victim, told Ban Bueng police: “I was looking for potatoes before I smelled a foul odour. At that moment I saw Kumarncherd’s body lying under a tree.

The 55-year-old village chief of the nearest community, Akkarawat Thongtam, also told police: “Local villagers saw at least three elephants around October 28 last month near our village, which is in a rural and remote area. The villagers tried to chase them up a nearby hill. We believe it is the same group of elephants that attacked Tongbai. This area has quite a few wild elephants and few visitors.”

Police believe Tongbai was killed at least 15 days before his body was found. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. Thongtam stated that the victim was not known to nearby villagers and that they did not know why he was there, although he noted that people occasionally went for walks in the remote forests and jungles, despite the danger from wild animals.
