Samet police have arrested and charged a Buddhist in Chonburi’s main district for being in possession of crystal methamphetamine after police were called to investigate a case of trespassing in Samet.

Police arrived on the scene and found 32-year-old Phra Parinya Eiamnitikorn in an emotional state, who is a monk at a temple in Chonburi.

He had an argument with an unknown woman in the rented room. Police reportedly found a bag containing one gram of crystal methamphetamine in a cigarette box that was in his possession after the monk subjected himself to a house search.

Phra Parinya admitted that he bought the drugs for 400 baht. He brought food from a temple to the woman, whom he described as his girlfriend despite the Buddhist monk’s vows of celibacy because she had recently been injured in a motorcycle accident. They argued before he reportedly punched his girlfriend in the face, leading to a call to police for help. It is not clear who called the police or whether it was the woman or a neighbour who heard the altercation.

Phra Parinya was returned to the temple where the abbot promptly removed him from office before the incident and ended his experience as a monk. He was then taken to Samet Police Station to be charged with assault and drug possession.
