A team of Territorial Defense volunteers raided a temple in the Khon Sawan district of northeastern Chaiyaphum province and arrested a monk there for using and selling methamphetamine pills, police said.

The raid was led by Phanthat Phu-sanga, a senior deputy. the district chief followed reports from whistleblowers and complaints from local residents that the 40-year-old monk, Phra Suthorn Sonkaew, was acting as a drug dealer in the village, selling meth pills to teenagers.

Phra Suthorn, the monk at Wat Chaimongkol in the village of Khon Sawan, initially denied the charge, police said.

During a search of his living quarters, the team found a black plastic container containing 36 meth pills under his bed. When confronted with the evidence, Phra Suthorn confessed that he had just bought 40 meth pills for 100 baht for three pills. He had used two of the pills himself and sold two to young villagers, leaving 36 in the bag.

A urine test of his gave a purple result, which means that he had taken the drug “Ice”.

He was then laicized and taken to Khon Sawan Police Station, where he was charged with using and possessing drugs for the purpose of selling them.
