Russian tourists lead the way in winter holiday arrivals in Phuket, ‘Sandpiper’ helps Russians remain at the top of the list
Tourists from Russia rank first among foreign tourists in the number of arrivals for New Year holidays on the resort island of Phuket in Thailand and are likely to maintain this position throughout the New Year holidays, the Phuket News reported.
Russians first rose to the top of the list for holiday arrivals in Phuket in late November and have maintained the trend so far.
According to immigration data, 17,513 Russians have arrived in Phuket since the beginning of the month, followed by German nationals with 11,960, with Britons in third place at 9,476.
It should be noted that since Monday the number of arrivals to Phuket under the “Test&Go” programme has started to decline sharply due to the suspension of the programme. However, arrivals on the Sandbox programme do not show a clear downward trend.
It should also be noted that the suspension of the Test&Go programme has not affected Russian tourist arrivals, as Russia, as well as Kazakhstan and Ukraine, are not on the list of Test&Go allowed countries.
Meanwhile, new direct flights to Phuket from Russian-speaking countries continue to open. Sunday, December 26, Sunday Airlines resumed flights to Phuket, carrying 240 tourists from Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Ural Airlines resumed direct scheduled flights to Phuket on Christmas Eve, December 24, delivering 90 Russian tourists from Irkutsk.
Only yesterday, 17 passenger flights arrived and delivered tourists to the resort island: THAI Airways, TUI Fly, Air Astana, Etihad, Emirates, Finnair, Turkish Airlines, S7 Airline, Hong Kong Express, Scoot, two Qatar Airways flights, three Singapore Airlines flights and two private jets.
Despite rumours circulating in the media that travel giant TUI Nordic had cancelled all flights to Phuket from December 25, the company’s headquarters in Sweden denied the reports. On Monday and Tuesday, TUI flights took tourists to Phuket.
