A motorway bridge has also partially collapsed in a huge explosion which shook Bologna Airport in Italy.

Footage shared on social media shows an enormous fireball in the sky and smoke rising over the airport in the north of the country after a crash occurred involving a petrol tanker.

According to the MailOnline, officers have said the blast could be felt in the busy terminal and was caused by an accident on the nearby motorway.

Witnesses have said that a crash involving a petrol tanker took place, with the vehicle then exploding. Several people are believed to have been injured as well as two people dead.

Police said they had closed the motorway where the crash took place as well as the surrounding area on the outskirts of Bologna.

In a statement on Twitter the police said: “Due to an accident on the highway, an explosion occurred resulting in a fire at Via Marco Emilio Lepido. Circulation compromised, not only on the motorway, but also in the Borgo Panigale area.”

Italian firefighters tweeted that they have sent multiple rescue and emergency squads, including one from their urban search and rescue team.

They wrote: “tanker explosion: extinguished the flames, in progress the cooling operations. Teams  verify the presence of victim”.

Sky News reported that it took three hours for the flames to be fully extinguished.
