NACC asks 1 year and 4 months to investigate wealthy Red Bull heir

Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission, the NACC, informed media yesterday about its investigation into the mishandled Vorayuth Yoovidhya case.

Vorayuth, better known as “Boss” and heir to the Red Bull fortune, remains a fugitive from justice after the 2012 murder of a police officer.

NACC Chief Commissioner General Watcharapol Prasarnrajkit said he expected the investigation by the commission of 15 senior police officers, prosecutors and investigators to be concluded within a year and four months. Among the 15 people under investigation are two police generals.

The original case against Vorayuth was dropped last July, sparking widespread outrage over alleged preferential treatment in the justice system for wealthy and well-connected Thais. After mounting public pressure, another arrest warrant was issued for the Red Bull heir in August last year.

The NACC investigation encountered the mishandling of the original case and arose from the results of an investigation by former NACC Commissioner Professor Vicha Mahakun.

Vicha’s team questioned the Attorney General’s Office and the Royal Thai Police about the decision of Nate Natsuk, then-Deputy Attorney General, to drop the case against Vorayuth last year.
