Streaming service Netflix and social media app TikTok has taken measures against Russia in protest against the invasion of Ukraine. Netflix has shut down all services in Russia and TikTok has stopped live streaming and uploading new videos.

“Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our services in Russia,” Netflix said in a statement to Variety. The streaming service further announced that it would halt all future projects from Russia, including four Russian “Netflix Originals” already in the works.

Netflix has 222 million subscribers worldwide. Russia has a small share in this. The country has fewer than a million Netflix subscribers, as residents generally use other streaming services. The ties between Russia and Netflix were already not optimal, because the company refused to host 20 Russian channels that it had to offer under Russian law.

TikTok also decides to take measures due to the events in Ukraine and the involvement of Russia. The Russian authorities have passed a new law on spreading ‘fake news. This would make it possible to impose prison sentences on people who are guilty of doing so.

TikTok is known for the personal videos created by the users of the app. People who continue to share videos about the Russian military or about sanctions against the country are more at risk from the new law. ” We have no choice but to suspend live streaming and new video uploads while we assess the impact of this law” TikTok said in a statement. “Our highest priority is the safety of our employees and our users.” Russian users of the app can still send each other instant messages.
