It’s been in the air for a while, of course, but before that, Netflix has officially released the news that Squid Game fans have been waiting for. The South Korean hit series is getting a sequel.

Not only has Netflix announced the second season through an ominous teaser, but director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk also announced in a press release that the sequel is in the works. “It took 12 years to make the first season of Squid Game, but it only took 12 days to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” writes Dong-hyuk. “As the writer, director and producer of Squid Game, I want to give a shout-out to all the fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.”

Dong-hyuk revealed in November that Squid Game will be getting a second season. “It’s almost like I don’t have a choice!” he joked at the time. At the time, he indicated that he had not yet been able to work on the sequel. “I still have to work on the second season,” Dong-hyuk told the international television festival MIPTV in Cannes, France. “Hopefully I can show it to the fans at the end of 2024.” So it looks like fans will have to be patient for the new season.

The first season of Squid Game came out in September last year and became a huge success in no time . Within a month, the series managed to keep more than 130 million viewers on the edge of their seats and netted Netflix no less than $891 million. That made Squid Game the most popular Netflix Original ever.
