Netflix’s next shocking true crime is about a decades old mystery of a woman’s identity
True crime junkies take note: Netflix will be putting a new crime documentary online next month. The Girl in the Picture is about a woman who went missing for thirty years and didn’t even know her own name.
The story begins with a photo of a man and a young blond girl who are clearly uncomfortable. Journalist Matt Birkbeck came across this photo in 2002 and went on to investigate. Who were the people in the photo and what happened to the girl?
Matt learned that around her teens, the girl was known as Sharon Marshall. She was ambitious and a good student, but no one around her knew who Sharon and the man she called her father really were, including Sharon herself. The only person who knew her identity was her abusive and fugitive father.

The documentary is a film adaptation of Matt’s award-winning books A Beatiful Child and its sequel Finding Sharon. The Girl in the Picture was created by Skye Borgman, who you may know from her documentaries Abducted in Plain Sight and Ax to Grind.
The Girl in the Picture will be available on Netflix from July 6.
