Thailand will close its doors to visitors from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe from December 1, the health ministry said.
The ministry has since disabled all registration methods available in these countries to enter Thailand.
Those who have already been allowed to enter Thailand will be quarantined for 14 days.
This decision was made in response to reports of a new, more easily transmissible Covid-19 strain reported in South Africa on November 24. The variant, called Omicron, has since been spotted in Botswana, Belgium, Hong Kong and Israel.
