Thai nightlife workers rallied in Bangkok, protesting in front of the Government House and demanding help from the authorities

A group of social fund representatives known as the “high heels gang” staged a showdown calling on Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Oche. They demanded state aid for social workers affected by the order to close nightlife establishments due to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to a Bangkok Post report, the protesters were led by the Empower Foundation.

The strikers said their industry was affected by the coronavirus restrictions but, unlike other sectors, they had not received government assistance to compensate for the financial difficulties they face. The women complain that workers in bars, clubs and other nightlife establishments have not been earning any money since the pandemic began almost two years ago. Moreover, they have been excluded from government relief measures despite calls for help.

“The High Heels Gang” is calling on the Thai government to include them in plans to provide monthly assistance of 5,000 baht to social workers. Thanta Laovilavanyakul of Empower Foundation explained that payments are now made every month to those on welfare, but this excludes most workers in the night industry.

“It has been 426 days since the government ordered the closure of nightclubs to deal with the Covid-19 outbreak, as a result of which we have lost jobs and income. However, no government relief measures are in place as most of these workers are not insured under the social security scheme. The government should commit itself not to abandon anyone and ensure that everyone can access government assistance and social security,” said Thanta Laovilavanyakul.

After the protesting night priestesses read out their list of demands sent to Government House, they proceeded to pack parcels of high-heeled shoes. The shoes were sent to various authorities around the country and contained messages to the Thai government about the financial difficulties they were experiencing.
