Today, the first day of the reopening of the island, unfortunately, no tourists arrive in Koh Samui under the ‘Samui Plus’ itinerary, similar to the ‘Phuket Sandbox’.

Tomorrow only 4 foreign tourists are expected. Tourism officials say it will be a slow start and they expect an influx of travellers to the trio of islands in the Gulf of Thailand to start in a few months.

However, the island is today welcoming 11 media company representatives to promote the reopening program, which will allow tourists vaccinated against the Covid19 virus to enter the island without undergoing a 14-day quarantine. They take a Bangkok Airways flight from the capital to Koh Samui.

The Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association chairman says they don’t expect many travellers to visit in the third quarter of the year, given the rise in Covid-19 cases. More are expected in the fourth quarter.

“We do not expect many travellers to visit Thailand in the third quarter of this year, as the increase in daily Covid-19 cases in the country would erode their confidence… However, what we can do is start tourism activities in accordance with standard procedure in an effort to boost the country’s tourism.”
