Chonburi province will officially become one of 18 provinces in Thailand under a red zone from Sunday, April 18, signifying the highest controlled zone for the Covid-19 measures.

Speaking about the status change, Pattaya Mayor Sonthaya Khunplume told The Pattaya News and associated Thai media this afternoon, April 16, “Chonburi is in the top five of the highest number of confirmed covid-19 cases in the country. ”

“Five rules that provinces in the red zone must follow are that restaurants must close at 9 pm. It is not allowed to serve alcohol. The closure of all entertainment venues such as bars and night clubs, which are an important part of Pattaya City. Shopping centres can open, but they are not allowed to open their gaming areas and arcades, and the mall itself must close at 9:00 PM.

Educational places and schools will also be closed and lastly, sports places can remain open but they have to limit the number of people and adjust their hours i.e. close at 9 pm In addition, supermarkets and convenience stores in a red zone such as 7-11’s should be between 11 pm and are closed at 4:00 in the morning. These measures will take effect from Sunday, April 18. However, no curfew is imposed. Said the mayor.

“Regardless, we will continue to participate in meetings with the Governor of Chonburi to discuss the options for further Covid-19 measures for Chonburi. As a province, we had already made the decision to close cinemas. We may need to take more Covid-19-related measures to keep the situation under control. Said the mayor, without going into specific what those measures could be.

“The Pattaya Music Festival scheduled for May has been postponed, as have all other similar festivals that cannot limit the number of people. We are also going to cancel most of the traditional Wan Lai (Songkran) events that we planned for April 19th, as it involves pouring water on monks and the elderly and that is a risky activity at the moment. They would also attract groups of more than 50 people, which is another measure taken by the Thai government to control activity in red zones. Explained the mayor.

However, the kite on beach event from April 9 to April 19 will continue as the event takes place in an open space, as well as the Food Culture Business Exhibition (Connext) opposite Central Festival. Strict social distance rules are enforced at both events and face masks are required. Because they are outdoor events in an open space, the chances of Covid-19 spreading is small, according to the Chonburi Department of Public Health. Concluded the mayor.

The Pattaya News notes that the Jet Ski World Cup, scheduled for next weekend, was not specifically discussed, but given that it is an open-air event at Jomtien Beach in the ocean, the event is likely to continue, with fewer (if any) fans and fewer “Street activities”.

It is important for you as a guest in Thailand to know that the measures and developments regarding the Covid19 virus (can) change at any time, do not blame your news bear if he does not report the changes in time.
