Two men were injured in a brawl at Tree Town Market in Soi Buakhao last night and a third died this morning.

The incident took place at Tree Town market around 10 pm, police quickly arrived on the scene accompanied by rescuers from Sawang Boriboon and found 54-year-old Narawit Pongsungnoen on the ground seriously injured and bleeding profusely from stab wounds from a sharp object. Some witnesses described the weapon being used as a long knife or machete although the exact stabbing weapon could not be immediately determined.

Narawit was rushed to a local hospital after first aid was used at the incident but was pronounced dead on arrival by Sawang Boriboon medical and rescue workers.

According to a Covid19 testing team, whose names were withheld by police due to the nature of their work, several members had witnessed the entire incident as it took place almost directly in front of their test station. The team was present with free PCR testing for customers and staff of nearby restaurants that sell alcohol. This stems from a recent order from the Governor of Chonburi, as seen here, that we discussed yesterday.

The Covid19 testing team told Lieutenant Colonel Krikrit that the incident was the result of a group of several men, as many as seven, who argued violently, which escalated into a physical brawl directly in front of dozens of shocked tourists and visitors from nearby sites.

The victim, Narawit, was injured in the original brawl and tried to flee, but according to test team witnesses, he fell near their booth and was brutally attacked by several men as he lay on the ground. The attack reportedly involved kicking the victim in the face, stamping him and stabbing him in the chest with a sharp knife.

After the incident, the other men involved, who according to the witnesses were of Thai nationality, fled the scene. Witnesses from the Covid19 testing team told Lieutenant Colonel Krikrit that at least two of the other men involved also appeared to have suffered injuries.

Lieutenant Colonel Krikrit stated that his team is investigating the motive behind the brawl, noting that based on early information gathered by the Pattaya Police Department, it appeared that the group of men had specifically agreed to meet to discuss a possible discuss business dispute prior to physical confrontation and escalation.

CCTV footage will be viewed from both the area of the incident and the escape route of the other men involved, as Pattaya police work to capture the suspects involved in the brawl.

Lieutenant Colonel Krikrit said the incident damaged Pattaya’s image as a safe family tourism destination and was a top priority for police to resolve the situation.
