Pattaya mayor shrugs off blame for exploding Covid19 explosion
The mayor of Pattaya blames the “restaurants” for the skyrocketing number of Covid19 infections in the city, especially those that flouted disease control rules, but blames his town hall directly, the public says.
In Pattaya there are “restaurants” and there are countless bars that operate illegally or with weak certifications and licenses, often without a kitchen that doesn’t even have a bitterballen.
Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome blames these locations and their lack of capacity limits, social distancing and coronavirus testing for the current outbreak. Ultimately, however, the town hall is responsible for permitting, inspection and enforcement, so that the mayor can see who is to blame by thoroughly testing the responsible officials.
Sonthaya defended his string of weekly festivals, including the Pattaya Countdown, claiming none of the infections came from there.
The fact is that due to excessive disease checks, relatively few people participated in this year’s countdown. And those who did were from other provinces and would have tested positive there.
With the number of cases in Pattaya mushrooming, with 2,500 cases recorded in the past week, city officials are trying to shift the blame onto someone else.
