2020 Olympic podiums to be made from recycled plastic

2020 Olympic podiums to be made from recycled plastic

Podiums at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be made from plastic waste donated by local residents or collected from the sea, organisers said Tuesday, as part of a sustainability push.

It will be the first time podiums have been made from recycled materials and organisers say they will need about 45 tonnes of plastic to fashion around 100 podiums for the Games.

Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto said the plan would help push a message of sustainability, which organisers want to be a key theme of the Games next year.

“By sending that message to both Japan and the rest of the world, we think this project will have great significance,” he told reporters.

Plastic for the project will be gathered at more than 2,000 outlets of a local supermarket chain, where boxes will be set out for Tokyo residents to drop off their recyclable plastic waste.

The project will also use plastic waste that has been collected from the ocean during marine clean-ups.

The 2020 organisers have been keen to promote an eco-friendly message with the Games, including making all the medals from recycled electronic waste.

They solicited waste from the public as well as local Japanese industry and business, collecting 2,700 kgs (about 5,950 pounds) of bronze, 30.3 kgs (67 pounds) of gold and 4,100 kg (about 9,040 pounds) of silver.

And Japanese athletes competing at the Games will also wear an official kit made in part from recycled clothes collected from across the country.

Four Vietnamese women arrested for unlicensed massage in Ubon

Four Vietnamese women were arrested on Tuesday for lacking a permit for massage work at a traditional parlour in Ubon Ratchathani’s Muang district.

The four were discovered by immigration police as they checked workplaces in the downtown as part of a suppression campaign against migrants working illegally.

Police said they found the four providing massage in the Nok Yoong massage shop. The shop lacked a licence and none of the four had a work permit.

The four were identified as Thuang Thiyoong, 45, Lo Thi Huang, 42, Kwang Thi Dao, 40 and Le Thi Than, 42.

Thuang told police that she took care of the shop on behalf of a Thai owner, Buaphet Buachai, 75. Thuang said the four also doubled as prostitutes when patrons demanded it.

Face-slapping patient returns to same Rayong hospital, this time as road accident victim

The 21-year-old man who slapped a nurse at Rayong’s Pluak Daeng Hospital for not treating his injured ankle quickly enough for his liking on June 5, this week went back to the same hospital – this time for injuries sustained in a road accident.

Supakorn Khumrak was rushed to the hospital on Monday afternoon after being seriously injured when his motorcycle collided with a passenger car.

The car’s driver, Preeyanuch Boonklin, 25, was slightly injured in the accident.

According to the police investigation and Preeyanuch’s dashboard camera footage, Supakorn, riding his motorbike at high speed, overtook a van ahead of him, putting him in Preeyanuch’s oncoming lane and colliding with her car.

Supakorn had made the headlines last week when he sought medical treatment for a leg injury, but was told by a nurse at the emergency ward to fill in a patient form first and wait to be called.

Apparently lacking the patience to comply, he started arguing with the nurse and slapped her face before leaving the hospital without getting treatment.

The incident prompted Pluak Daeng Hospital to file a police complaint over an assault on one of its staff members.

Adopted one-month-old ‘snatched’ by real parent

Adopted one-month-old ‘snatched’ by real parent

The incident in which a one-month-old baby was snatched from his 30-year-old mother in Surat Thani’s Muang district on Monday, took a new twist police investigation revealed a custody battle between the child’s adoptive mother and his 18-year-old biological mum, police said on Tuesday.

Forty policemen have been dispatched to look for the baby, after Yala-native Sasithorn Chujit filed a complaint that she had been drugged and could not put up a fight when the child was snatched from her while she was in a car at noon on Monday.

However, after six hours of questioning, Sasithorn finally admitted that it was a fabrication and the child had been taken away by his biological mother. She told police that she had had a miscarriage after five to six months of pregnancy, and in order to protect her husband from grief, she pulled strings and secured a newborn from Trang to declare as her child. She also told police that she used a document from a community hospital to apply for the baby’s birth certificate.

Investigators then contacted the baby’s real mother, asking her to bring the baby to the Muang Surat Thani Police Station to prove facts. The 18-year-old mother, Ing-on Klincheun, showed up at the precinct at 9.30pm on Tuesday and presented evidence, including the baby’s birth certificate and a Line message telling Sasithorn that she was taking her baby back.

Police will collect DNA samples from both women, the baby and two other relatives to solve the conflict. While awaiting test results, the baby will be placed under the care of the Surat Thani Children and Family Home.

Police also used this case as an opportunity to urge the public to not panic about people allegedly being rendered helpless by a mere touch or exposure to chemical, as publicised in Thai social media.

Police is now also probing if Sasithorn could be charged with filing a false information to state officials regrading the baby boy’s birth certificate – as the biological mother had already filed for and obtained it first.

The latest in pest control: If you can’t beat them, eat them!

A northeastern province has come up with a solution for pest control that buys into the Internet meme, “If you can’t beat them, eat them!”

Khon Kaen Governor Somsak Jangtrakul on Monday presided over the launch of an operation to eradicate sucker fish (Hypostomus plecostomus), which are deemed a threat to native species and the environment, from the large pond at Bung Tung Sang park in the provincial capital.

The overwhelming population of sucker fish at the park, along with other factors, had led to fish deaths en masse, with the many carcasses emitting a foul smell that spread to the surrounding area.

To combat the over-population of sucker fish in the pond, the scheme saw villagers catching a total of 200 kilograms of live fish to sell at Bt3 per kilo to officials.

They then arranged for renowned Tobishinchi chef Thanachai Ekkawan to use the fish as ingredients in a cooking demonstration as a means of encouraging public consumption of the species.

Michelin star chef Thanachai said the sucker fish is edible as its meat is dense and of high protein, although its hard, scaly appearance can be scary.

He demonstrated the preparation of dishes including larp spicy minced fish meat, stir-fried fish meat in chilli paste and deep-fried fish meat with lemon sauce, all of which proved popular on the day.

Somsak said he had also assigned the provincial fishery office to consider using sucker fish as feed for crocodile farms.

The sucker fish, an alien species to Thailand, is known in Thai as pla tesaban (municipality fish).

Many Thais have tended to raise sucker fish, along with other pet fish, to clean the inside of their fish tanks, but when they get too big, they often then release them into natural water sources without realising or caring whether that would affect the environment and local species of fish.

Women’s World Cup Record Breaking Win For USA vs TH

Match day five of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicked off in Paris Tuesday afternoon. The day’s matches feature New Zealand and the Netherlands in Group E and all four teams of Group F, the last group in the tournament.

United States 13 – 0 Thailand

The last team to play their opening match, the United States had something to prove when they opened their 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup defense Tuesday. The U.S. women were the clear favorite to win this match and with five wins and two draws, they had never lost an opening match in the history of the tournament.

United States vs. Thailand match recap

To call this match a rout is an understatement. Continuing their opening match undefeated streak, the number one ranked United States barely gave the No. 34 ranked Thailand a change.

The U.S. came out of the gate strong, dominating possession and keeping the ball in Thailand’s half of the field. They found the back of the net in the fifth minute on their third shot. But after VAR review, the goal was called back because a U.S. player was in an offside position.

Morgan corrected that in the 12th minute, putting away her first of the night. Kelly O’Hara played a perfect ball over the top of the defenders from the right side of the penalty area and Morgan headed it past the Thai keeper effortlessly.

It was all downhill from there.

By the end of the first half, the U.S. had taken a 3-0 lead. No one could have predicted they would score 10 more in the second half.

The United States’ 13 goals is the most-ever scored in a World Cup match – men or women. Alex Morgan’s five goals ties the single-game record in a Women’s World Cup match held by Michelle Akers (USA).

Chile 0 – 2 Sweden

Chile made their first appearance in the Women’s World Cup Tuesday in the Group F opener. The 39th ranked La Roja Femenina took on ninth-ranked Sweden, who have played in every FIFA Women’s World Cup since it began in 1991. It is the first time these two sides had met.

Match recap

Through the first 45 minutes, Chile staved off Sweden’s attack. Sweden’s best chance came off their third corner kick in the 23rd minute. A well-placed header to the bottom corner of the net looked certain to go in. But a fingertip save by a diving Goalkeeper Christiane Endler knocked the ball clear as it teetered on the goal line, keeping Sweden off the score sheet. The Chilean keeper made two more big saves in the first half, blanking the Swedish attack.

The Swedish women held 70 percent of the possession, and outshot La Roja 8-2. But the score remained tied nil-nil as the whistle blew to end the half.

The weather was a tale of two halves in Rennes, as a the sunshine at the start of the match gave way to an absolute soaking downpour for the ending 45 minutes. In the 72nd minute, the ref has made the decision to pause the match, due to the severity of the weather.

After the weather delay, Sweden’s attack came back in full force, finally breaking the deadlock in the 83rd minute. A scrappy fight for the ball in the Chilean box had led to a few missteps and missed kicks when Asllani ran up and popped the ball over Endler’s head for the first goal.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Janogy – who entered the match as a sub, in the 81st minute – found the ball 40 yards out and out ran three defenders to put away her first international goal. The late goal sealed Sweden’s win, giving Chile no change to equalize.

Goals

  • 83′ – Kosovare Asllani (SWE)
  • 90’+4 Madelen Janogy (SWE)

Cards

  • 67′ – Magdalena Eriksson (SWE)
  • 78′ – Carla Guerrero (CHI)

New Zealand 0-1 Netherlands

New Zealand vs. Netherlands started the action Tuesday, culminating the first matches for Group E. Expectations were high for the Dutch in only their second World Cup appearance. Both countries had previously faced each other in the group stage of the 2015 Women’s World Cup, resulting in a 1-0 win to the Netherlands.

Match recap

History repeated itself in a hard-fought, back-and-forth battle on both sides of the ball. Plenty of chances were had, but no goals through 90 minutes of play.

Patience paid off for Netherlands, however. In the second minute of stoppage time, the scoreless tie was finally broken. With tired legs, Netherland lobbed a ball into the box, two headers later, Jill Roord scored her 4th International goal for Netherlands.

Literally minutes from a draw and a much-needed point in the Group E standings, New Zealand has their tenth loss in World Cup play. Their all-time record in the Women’s World Cup is 0-3-10. The Kiwis go on to play Cameroon, who lost to Canada yesterday, while New Zealand faces Canada in a battle for the top of Group E.

Lesbian Couple Attacked After Refusing To Kiss For Gang’s Entertainment

Lesbian Couple Attacked After Refusing To Kiss For Gang’s Entertainment

A woman has spoken out about a horrifying attack she and her girlfriend were subjected to while travelling on a night bus in North London.

28-year-old Melania Geymonat had been out on a date with her girlfriend Chris, and had been travelling back to Chris’ home in Camden when the attack happened on May 30.

After realising they were a couple, a group of men on the bus began demanding Melania and Chris kiss in front of them for their entertainment. When they refused, the gang proceeded to physically assault them, leaving them both covered in blood.

Air hostess Melania has spoken about the attack over Facebook, describing it as ‘chauvinist, misogynistic and homophobic violence’.

Recalling how the men’s harassment quickly escalated to physical violence, Melania wrote:

They started behaving like hooligans, demanding that we kissed so they could enjoy watching, calling us ‘lesbians’ and describing sexual positions.

I don’t remember the whole episode, but the word ‘scissors’ stuck in my mind. It was only them and us there.

Trying to diffuse the situation, Melania tried to make jokes, while Chris pretended to be feeling unwell. However, this did not deter the gang, who only became more ‘enthusiastic’.

Melania wrote:

The next thing I know is that Chris is in the middle of the bus fighting with them. On an impulse, I went over there only to find her face bleeding and three of them beating her up.

The next thing I know is I’m being punched. I got dizzy at the sight of my blood and fell back. I don’t remember whether or not I lost consciousness.

The group of men then allegedly stole items from the bloodied couple before fleeing the scene. Melania has not returned to work since the attack, and is unsure as of yet whether or not her nose is broken.

Writing on Facebook, Melania spoke up bravely against acts of homophobic violence:

What upsets me the most is that VIOLENCE HAS BECOME A COMMON THING, that sometimes it’s necessary to see a woman bleeding after having been punched to feel some kind of impact.

I’m tired of being taken as a SEXUAL OBJECT, of finding out that these situations are usual, of gay friends who were beaten up JUST BECAUSE. We have to endure verbal harassment AND CHAUVINIST, MISOGYNISTIC AND HOMOPHOBIC VIOLENCE because when you stand up for yourself shit like this happens.

By the way, I am thankful to all the women and men in my life that understand that HAVING BALLS MEANS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. I just hope that in June, Pride Month, stuff like this can be spoken out loudly so they STOP HAPPENING!

According to the National LGBT Survey, published in February 2019, over two thirds of LGBT respondents avoided holding hands with a same-sex partner because they were fearful of how others would react.

Woman ‘Choked Her Boyfriend And Squeezed His Genitals Until They Bled’

Woman ‘Choked Her Boyfriend And Squeezed His Genitals Until They Bled’

A woman in Florida has been arrested for grabbing her boyfriend’s genitals and squeezing them until they bled, police said.

Katie Lee Pitchford, 21, was arrested on June 4 after officers from the Indian Harbour Beach Police Department responded to reports of a domestic altercation.

A man had called the police complaining that his girlfriend, whom he lived with, had attacked him during an altercation in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to a police report, the woman had become ‘enraged’ and had hit her boyfriend with a brush, the Miami Herald reports.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the man with blood running down the left side of his face, which also had visible bruising.

The victim of the attack told officers that the suspect, later identified as Pitchford, continued to ‘strike him with her fists and scratched the left side of his face’.

The man also told officers his girlfriend had ‘grabbed him by his balls and squeezed them until they were bleeding’.

The woman allegedly put her hands around her boyfriend’s throat so he couldn’t breathe, he told police, so he wrestled her by the arms and was able to escape and call for help.

The unidentified man told officers the attack came after a fight between the pair. Pitchford has since admitted the two were arguing, but denies anything physical happening. It’s not clear what the couple were fighting about.

The 21-year-old was already on felony probation for resisting an officer with violence in November 2017. A month before that, in October 2017, she was also arrested for resisting an officer with violence, the MailOnline reports.

The reports states Pitchford asked to talk to the victim while in the back of the patrol car, with the intention of apologising.

Despite asking to say sorry to her boyfriend, a Brevard County judge has ordered Pitchford to have no contact with the victim or return to his home – with the exception of being accompanied by police to retrieve her belongings, Florida Today reports.

The 21-year-old was charged with domestic battery and violation of probation. She is currently being held at the Brevard County Jail Complex on no bond.

A court hearing has been scheduled for June 25.
