Pattaya city police had set up drink-driving checkpoints in Pattaya last night to prevent traffic accidents during the Loy Krathong festival and warned drivers that many more checkpoints would be set up over the holiday weekend.

A team of Pattaya Traffic Police led by Captain Amornthep Maima set up a checkpoint on Pattaya Second Road in North Pattaya. He told a local reporter: “There have been many traffic accidents after the curfew was lifted (a Covid19 nighttime curfew from previous months) and after many Covid-19 restrictions were lifted in Pattaya and Chonburi.
Pattaya also has many events and festivals every weekend and many tourists like to have an alcoholic drink during the festivals, although it is officially discouraged and the bar and entertainment sector remains legally closed, even in Pattaya.”

“We need to protect our community and ensure road safety while travelling. Most traffic accidents in Pattaya have been caused by drunk driving lately.

“This morning three drivers were found at our checkpoint who exceeded the legal limit to drink alcohol. They were taken to the Pattaya Police Station for further legal action,” said Captain Amornthep.

At the same time, he also warned that there would be more checkpoints over the weekend, so take this warning to heart and make sure you don’t get in trouble.
