Sompong Jirasirilert, deputy director of operations in the Navy Department, said the first phase of reconstruction of Jomtien Beach would be completed on schedule.
The first phase of the Jomtien Beach renovation will be completed on schedule by the end of the year, despite natural and mechanical issues.
Sompong Jirasirilert told this week that the beach widening from Jomtien Chalet Hotel to U Jomtien Pattaya Hotel in Najomtien would be completed by the end of December.
Both weather and mechanical problems threatened to seriously delay the project, including the failure of the ship that sucks sand from the ocean floor at Koh Rang Kwien, about 15 kilometres from Jomtien Beach.
The contractor quickly got the ship back in service, but also deployed more sand compaction machines to make up for a lost time. The project is now back on schedule, Sompong said.
Once the first phase is completed, the authorities will request an additional budget to spray an additional 2.9 kilometres of Jomtien Beach and widen it to 50 meters. The work is expected to take nearly three years to complete.
