Phuket police under fire after crackdown on foreigners riding electric scooters
News of police officers arresting foreign tourists riding electric scooters in Phuket province’s Patong district yesterday went viral across the country.
Police accused the tourists of allegedly using unregistered vehicles on roads and seized the scooters to take legal action against the entrepreneurs renting out electric scooters.
The news immediately went viral among internet users. Some people questioned why the police did not arrest the entrepreneurs, and some warned that the police action could affect tourism in Phuket.
One spokesman for the Patong Police Station said police had banned the use of electric scooters because users and other motorists were at risk of potential road accidents.
The reason given by the police was that electric scooters were not registered under Thai law and that they would endanger other road users, citing comments from the provincial office of land transport.
