Police arrest 4 escaped Covid19 prison inmates, manhunt for the other 5 intensifies

Four of the nine inmates who escaped from their temporary cell in Nakhon Pathom’s 11th Infantry Regiment have been safely behind bars since Saturday afternoon as the hunt for the other five intensifies.

A police officer said the inmates used a small saw blade to cut the iron bars, adding that the saw in question had been left near a toilet.

The escapes were noticed on camera images in the subdistrict of Bo Phlap around 2 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Detainees Ekkarat Paengklan, 18, and Natthakorn Matwangsaeng, 24, surrendered to police, while Paithoon Mekhlongbaeng, 36, and Bamrung Wongsawang, 43, were caught trying to flee.

Ekkarat, Paithoon and Bamrung are charged with drug abuse, while Natthakorn is charged with theft.

Major General Chomchawin Purthananon, chief of the Nakhon Pathom Provincial Police Station, said relatives of the detainees had been contacted and the hunt for the remaining escapees had been scaled up.

He called on the convicts to surrender immediately or they will face more charges than just escaping prison.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Worachai Arakrat, head of Nakhon Pathom Central Prison, said detainees are being held temporarily in the 11th Infantry Regiment to be screened for Covid-19 before being sent to the central prison.
