Thai police have shot dead a man wanted on suspicion of raping a child. Police were about to arrest the man when he allegedly fired a pistol shot at police.

In response, police immediately fired more than 30 shots at the man’s car, killing him instantly at a gas station in central Thailand’s Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province.

According to employees at a gas station in Lat Bua Luang district, the man drove into the gas station in a black Honda Jazz car. The car parked in front of the toilet for about 15 minutes when 2 police cars arrived at the station and parked next to it.

The employees said that when the police got out of the car, the man fired a pistol shot at the police from the car. In “self-defence”, police fired more than 30 shots at the man’s car, killing him instantly.

Police found the body of a 39-year-old man from Suphan Buri province in the car and collected evidence for more than 3 hours. In total, more than 30 shots were fired at the man, about 20 of which hit his body, police said.

The man was wanted under two arrest warrants issued by Suphan Buri Provincial Court, one for raping a child under 15 and another for taking a child under 15 from their parents for sexual offences.

The police officers who shot the suspected child molester are “extraordinary” police officers from the Suphanburi Provincial Police Investigation Unit.
