Police in northeast Thailand have arrested hundreds of underage youths for drinking alcohol

A composite police team has arrested hundreds of underage teenagers in the northern province of Chiang Rai for indulging in alcohol when the legal drinking age is 20.

Police raided a pub in the main city district early this morning and found 325 underage people drinking heavily, some of whom were as young as 16.

Many of the youths rushed off on their motorcycles when they saw the police appear around 2 a.m. The team found the room full of young customers drinking and dancing. The police gave the teenagers the fright of their lives when suddenly the fluorescent lights went on and the music stopped.

The pub owner was initially charged with allowing people under the age of 20 to use his services, operating outside legal hours and serving alcoholic beverages to minors, and related offenses.

Police intend to ask the governor of Chiang Rai to revoke the pub’s operating license and then close it for five years.

The officers who raided the pub were from the Department of Provincial Government and the Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection. The head of the DPA’s center for law enforcement operations led the raid. The center posted photos of the raid on its Facebook page today.

The center wrote that all three emergency exits from the pub were locked. The emergency exits of another pub in Thailand, Mountain B Pub in Chon Buri, were also locked when a catastrophic fire broke out there last month.
