Police kill two people in car that ran into police officers in Paris
French police opened fire in central Paris last night after a car rammed into officers. According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, the car drove into traffic and the driver ignored stop signs.
Because the driver ignored the stop signs and drove toward officers at high speed, the officers felt compelled to open fire. The driver and a passenger were killed. A third passenger was injured in the arm.

It is unknown if there is any connection between the incident and the presidential elections held in France on Sunday. After it became known that Emmanuel Macron has been re-elected, people took to the streets to demonstrate. This also happened in Paris, where the police used tear gas.
Emmanuel Macron was told on Sunday evening that he will remain president of France for another five years. He won the presidential election against right-wing Marine Le Pen with 58.54 per cent of the vote. It is rare for a French president to get a second term. Only 3 presidents have had that chance in the past 70 years.

According to the French newspaper Le Monde, 28 per cent of those entitled to vote did not turn up. Such a low turnout was last seen more than 50 years ago. France expert Marloes Beers tells the NOS that Macron ‘mainly received a lot of anti-Le Pen votes’. “The French do not necessarily vote for someone, but especially against the worst candidate,” said Beers.
