In India, a police officer raped a 13-year-old girl who was going to report a gang rape. The horrific act has sparked outrage and anger in India. “If even police stations are no longer safe for women, where can they go?” , asks politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The drama took place in Lalitpur in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The girl turned herself in to the police station after being allegedly raped by four men for days in April. After she managed to escape the men and returned to her village, she reported the gang rape on her father’s advice. Instead of helping her, the chief officer decided to rape her again. The victim is now in hospital, according to Reuters news agency.

The police officer has been arrested and suspended indefinitely. A criminal investigation has also been launched. Due to the fuss that has arisen about the case, the police want to come up with an investigation report within one day. “We will crack down on those who are guilty of this,” a senior police official told Reuters.

Women’s rights have been under pressure in India for some time. One of the most famous cases of gang rape took place in 2012 when a woman was raped and assaulted by six men on a moving bus. The woman died of her injuries two weeks later. The incident sparked a wave of stories about sexual violence in India.

Since the incident, India has been trying to tackle sexual abuse more actively. For example, there are stricter laws on sexual violence and the death penalty can be imposed for the rape of girls under 12 years old. Despite the stricter laws, the rape rate in India is still high. In 2020, almost 32,000 (attempted) rapes were reported in the country.
