Pongsakorn takes gold for Thailand at the Paralympics in Tokyo

Pongsakorn Paeyo, a wheelchair racer, won Thailand’s first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games on Sunday.

Pongsakorn raced to gold on the men’s 400m T53 in 46.61 seconds, followed by Canada’s Brent Lakatos in 46.75 seconds and Russia’s Vitalii Gritsenko in 49.41 seconds.

Pongsakorn’s gold mining also broke Lakatos’ previous world record of 46.82 seconds at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

Pongsakorn had made it through the preliminaries in 47.31 seconds.

His Thai compatriot, Pichet Krungget finished fifth in the race in 49.96 seconds.

With gold, silver and three bronze, Thailand is in 34th place on the medal table.
