Powerful tornadoes kill more than 80 in five US states

Dozens of tornadoes killed at least 80 people in the central United States yesterday. On the night of Friday or Saturday, the tornadoes left a trail of destruction in at least five states of the country.

Kentucky was hit hardest by the storm. Governor Andy Beshear confirmed yesterday that 70 people had been killed in his state with the expectation that the number could rise significantly. “The messages are heartbreaking. This was one of the toughest nights in Kentucky history,” Beshear said. US President Joe Biden also responded on Twitter in response to the many deaths in the country. “To lose a loved one in such a storm is an unimaginable tragedy,” he said in a tweet.

As of Friday evening, 24 tornadoes have been reported. The strongest tornado travelled more than 365 kilometres through the state of Kentucky yesterday. One of the villages that were hit very hard is Mayfield in western Kentucky. Almost not a single house would be standing in the village.
