Prime Minister Prayut becomes first Thai prime minister in 30 years to visit Saudi Arabia
Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will visit Saudi Arabia yesterday and tomorrow as a guest of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a government spokesman said.
Prayut’s visit will be the first leader-level meeting between the two governments in more than 30 years and the aim of the visit is to further bilateral ties between the two countries, the announcement said.
In an effort to rekindle the longstanding friendship, Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai visited Saudi Arabia in January 2020.
Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Thailand, established in 1957, after the theft of approximately $20 million worth of jewelry by a Thai janitor in 1989. This led to a protracted feud known as the “Blue Diamond Affair”. .
The theft became one of Thailand’s greatest unsolved mysteries involving many police officers.
A year after the theft, three Saudi diplomats were killed in three separate incidents in one night in Bangkok.
