Protester in a coma! Bangkok police maintain the position that riot police used rubber bullets

Police deny live ammunition fired at protesters outside Din Daeng Police Station in Bangkok this week. A young protester was reportedly shot in the neck and seriously injured outside the station, a chief of police told a news conference outside the Metropolitan Police Bureau yesterday, saying only rubber bullets had been used to control the crowd.

According to the Rajavithi hospital, the protester, who has not yet been identified and is said to be around 20 years old, is in a coma and is being treated in intensive care. According to the hospital, a bullet was found in his brain stem and the shot caused a laceration in his cervical vertebrae. The hospital has not said what type of bullet was found, but police say it was a rubber bullet. Many on social media accused the police of killing the protester.

The pro-democracy group Thalu Fah led a protest the day before yesterday, marching from the Victory Monument to the government building, calling on Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha to resign and accusing him of mishandling the Covid-19 crisis. A report by the Bangkok Post said tear gas was used against protesters entering restricted areas outside the government building. Later that evening, crowds flocked to Din Daeng Junction and the police station.

Riot police also previously used water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds during major protests.
