Russian billionaire parks his ultra-luxurious yacht in Koh Samui as Thailand lifts entry restrictions

It seems that the wealthy tourists seem to be returning to Thailand now that travel restrictions have been lifted, and one of the biggest signs is that superyachts have appeared on the Thai horizon.

One such yacht was Russian billionaire Alexander Alexandrovich Svetakov’s Cloudbreak superyacht, which was docked near Koh Samui last weekend.

Mister Svetakov, 54, is the second billionaire to arrive in “the land of smiles” in a superyacht. The first was a British businessman and investor Joe Lewis, 85, who anchored off the coast of Surat Thani in mid-May.

The Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Center inspected the 3.9 billion baht yacht and ensured that all 13 passengers and six crew members were fully vaccinated against Covid19, according to the criteria of the Ministry of Health.

Surat Thani governor Wichawut Jinto said the arrival of Svetakov proves that the islands of Samui, Tao and Pha-ngan have great potential to attract tourists. He said that the Marine Department is planning to build a cruise ship port at Hin Khom Cape on the coast of Samui and that it will generate a lot of revenue when completed.

“Before the pandemic, the number of cruise ships from Europe and Singapore entering Koh Samui every year had risen from 48 to 64″, he said, adding that on average more than 200,000 cruise ship passengers were transferred to the island each year.

Mister Svetakov, a project developer and chairman of Absolut Group, took delivery of the 75-metre Cloudbreak from German shipbuilders Abeking and Rasmussen in 2016.

Cloudbreak can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, consisting of a master suite, three double cabins and two twin cabins. The superyacht also features a helipad and an outdoor pool.
